Area Overview
The Town of Elk Point, with a population of over 1500, is located in the northeastern part of Alberta in the heart of the "Lakeland". Situated next to the North Saskatrchewan River on Highway 41, Elk Point is surrounded by some of the most breath-taking scenery our province has to offer.
Elk Point is a vibrant progressive town that offers something for young and senior alike. Elk Point has 2 doctors, a health center and an extended care center with 30 long term beds. Other health facilities include 2 medical clinics, Heritage Lodge, health unit and a dentist office. Along with ambulance service and R.C.M.P. detachment with 8 members, Elk Point is a safe caring community.
Elk Point has a very active senior's group with a senior center that provides a great place to meet and enjoy many activities. Elk Point offers a Sr./Jr. High School (7-12) and an Elementary School (k-6). Many other amenities include an indoor ice rink, an outdoor ice rink,curling rink,riding arena, tennis courts, numerous ball diamonds, and soccer fields.
Elk Point a full range of services that includes 2 major grocery stores, bakery, pharmacy,clothing and variety stores, major hardware store (Rona), tire and automotive supply outlets, motels, hotel,laundromat, a full service R.V. Park and numerous restaurants from fast food to fine dining.
Elk Point is surrounded my many scenic lakes and within 25 kilometers of Elk Point you have numerous campsites to choose from. The Elk Point Golf and Country Club located 2 kilometers west of Elk Point on Secondary Highway 646 not only offers you a 9 hole golf course but also a secluded campsite with power, showers and a large playground for the kids. This campsite can also be accessed from the Ironhorse Trail. Further west on 646 brings you to Stoney Lake which has excellent camping and boating and fishing experiences. Other lakes and campsites include Whitney lakes Provincial Park and the Elk Point Elks Widnerness Park on Kehiwin Lake. Kehewin Lake is approximately 7 miles long and provides a beautiful setting for all your water sports.
An impressive Fur trade Interpretive Centre is located just east of Elk Point along the bank of the North Saskatchewan River. The Fort George Buckingham House Interpretive Center is open through the summer months and allows you to go back in time to the fur trade era. Located in Elk Point next to our library is a 100 foot historical mural painted by a local artist, where colorful images of the past trace local history from the Northwest Rebellion to the present. On the north hill overlooking Elk Point stands a 32 foot chainsaw carved statue of Hudson's Bay Surveyor Peter Fiddler.
Location
The Town of Elk Point is situated in the County of St. Paul #19, on Highway 41. We are approximately 64 km north of the highway junction 41 and 16. Located approximately 235 kilomoters northeast of Edmonton we can also be accessed via highways 28, 29 and 36. The junction of highway 41 and secondary highway 646 meets on the south side of Elk Point. We can also be reached by air as the Elk Point Airport is located 8 kilometers east of Elk Point and has the longest airstrip in the region. Adventure travellers can ride Alberta's Ironhorse trail into Elk Point. The trail enters on the southside of Elk Point and our staging area allows you to park and enjoy our downtown.
Economic Base
The town's economic base is defined by agriculture, oil and gas, salt mining and tourism. Over 1/3 of the town's labour force is employed in the primary sector or resource extraction.
Economic Facts
Elk Point is in a very prolific heavy oil and gas reserve field. These fields include Lindbergh, Frog lake and Elk Point where over 35 thousand bbls of oil (equivalent) along with millions of cubic feet of natural gas are produced. Elk Point is home to the head office of Buffalo Oil Corporation along with major field offices of Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. Elk Point is also home to the main offices of numerous oil and gas service companies such as E-Can, Rocky Pine, Leeway, Richland, BMW Weatherford, Midfield Supply, National Oilwell, Heavycrude and Pyramid Corporation. Also located close to Elk Point are Canadian Crude Separators and NewAlta who clean contaminated soil and oilfield waste. Shamrock Valley Enterprises a major Construction and Fabrication Company who work throughout Alberta is located minutes from Elk Point. Elk Point Truss Ltd. is a manufacturing facility in Elk Point that manufactures trusses for residential and industrial companies.
Numerous other oil companies operate in the Elk Point region and they include Husky Oil, Baytex, Bonavista, Echoex, Devon and Watch Resources.
The Elk Point Business and Industrial Park is home to many of the above mentioned businesses and has currently expanded by adding 30 acres. Many businesses are expanding due to the very busy oil and gas industry and the opportunity is available for you to purchase industrial lots. Water Supply
The source of water is the North Saskatchewan River. A new water treatment plant was installed in 1986, which is capable of serving a population of 2,500 people. Commercial and residential usage rates are $40.00 per month for the first 14 cubic metres, and
$1.32 for each cubic metre over.
Waste Management
Sewage collection is a piped system and treatment is provided by aerated ponds which
was upgraded in 1998.
Elk Point has a bottle depot for the recycling of plastics, a paper recycling depot, and a sanitary landfill site.
Residential and commercial garbage is collected once a week, with disposal at a modified landfill located 9 km from town. There is an $12.00 charge per month for weekly garbage pick-up.

Air Service
Elk Point has a local air strip with a 1,371 metre asphalt runway. Condition of runway
can be obtained by calling 1-780-645-3006. The nearest commercial and air freight
service is at Lloydminster [120 km] and Cold Lake [102 km].
Trail System
Elk Point in partnership with Muni-Corr has developed 300 kms of Multi-Use trails that
join communities via the old abandoned railline. The IronHorse Trail is open to ATV's, Snowmobilers, Cyclists, Walkers, Horseback Riders or Hikers.

Elk Point has excellent recreational facilities which include: ice arena, 6 ball diamonds, 2 gymnasiums,senior recreational facility, tennis courts,curling rink, 9 hole golf course, community hall, gym and the Agricultural Society Riding Barn & Fair Grounds.
Elk Point has several parks and lakes to choose from.Elk Point's River Park just 3 kilometers south of Elk Point is located on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River. This campsite with 8 camping stalls has the only viewing deck on the North Saskatchewan River. You can also visit Whitney Lakes Provincial Park, the Kehewin Recreation Area, featuring the Elk Point Elks Wildeness Park. Other choices include Lac Bellevue Municipal Recreation Area, and Stony Lake Recreation Area. The Elk Point campground is located just 2 kms west of town on secondary highway 646. These 17 camping stalls offer you water,wood, power and showers. The Elk Point Golf and Country Club is also located here and our 9 hole course is beautifully laid out for your golfing experience. The Elk Point Motel and Campground also offers you an excellent campsite located just off highway 41 on the Northside of Elk Point.
As well, the Fort George-Buckingham House Interpretive Centre was recently constructed as a tourist attraction at the historic sites of the two forts.
Elk Point in partnership with Muni-Corr has developed the old abandoned railline into 300 km of Multi-use trails. Now known as Alberta's Ironhorse trail Elk Point offers an excellent staging area to start your adventure.
