Corporate Mission Statement

"To enhance the quality of life for people within Parkland County through the efficient and effective use of available resources."

Area Overview

Parkland County’s quiet, rural setting along with its fast growing, modern industrial parks and urban conveniences have made the County the choice of thousands of residents, as people discover the benefits of country living. Add to this, award-winning education and recreational systems and you have the winning combination that makes Parkland County a place of great opportunity.

The County is situated immediately west of the Edmonton, extending approximately 98 km from its east to west boundaries and 46 km between its north and south boundaries, surrounding the City of Spruce Grove, the Town of Stony Plain and the Village of Wabamun.

Picturesque landscapes and a bounty of beautiful lakes and rivers provide the backdrop for Parkland County’s mix of agriculture, industrial/commercial, residential and recreational uses.

In 2002 Parkland County partnered with Spruce Grove and Stony Plain to build the modern TransAlta Tri Leisure Centre, a multi-faceted recreation centre complete with two NHL-sized ice arenas; public skating surface; two indoor soccer fields; a three lane, 244 metre running and walking track; a fitness centre; a ten lane, 25 metre swimming pool with a children's area, waterslide and hot tub; a gymnasium with drop-in basketball and volleyball; as well as community and cultural space; the centre has something for everyone.  Visit www.trileisure.com for more information.

As those already conducting business here know, Parkland County has the lowest utilities rates and property taxes. When matched with the exceptional transportation infrastructure, its location and the availability of land, Parkland County offers the most opportunities for businesses, whether they are just starting-up or looking to expand. There are six major highways running throughout the County, providing excellent transportation access for business, tourists and residents.

Economic Base

Economic Development Vision

"A diversified, quality economic foundation, sustaining a healthy environment where people, business and industry thrive and grow."

The economic base of the region is becoming increasingly industrial through many different avenues.  Major examples of this industrial boom include:

  • the development of major power generation and coal mining projects near Lake Wabamun
  • the development of the Entwistle Industrial Area, which is a well positioned area serving both the booming oil sector in Drayton Valley and the Forestry Industry west of Entwistle.
  • the substantial investment in manufacturing and other businesses in the Acheson Industrial Area

The mixed agricultural industry is a vital part of the local economy, contributing more than $50 million annually. Variety ranges from traditional field crop production of wheat, oats, barley and canola to livestock and specialized vegetable and nursery operations. Field crops find their way to world markets for milling, malting and livestock feeds. Large quantities of hay and grains are used locally for beef cattle, hog and poultry rations. With over 900,000 consumers in the Parkland trading area, the County is a prime location for dairy and poultry farms. The County is also home to one of Canada's largest seed potato operations.

Tourism is also important to the area. The scenic rolling hills interspersed with lakes and varied terrain has attracted numerous investments in golf courses, resorts and other tourism-related facilities.

Economic Facts

Effective planning and a willingness to work with industry and land developers have resulted in well-serviced industrial areas that meet the needs of the end-user.

The Acheson Industrial Area covers 10,000 acres, and is Parkland's commercial/industrial hub. Acheson offers any business competitive property prices, no Business tax, attractive tax rates, and excellent road, rail and air transportation facilities. Businesses serve a local trading area of more than one million customers as well as to the world beyond.
