Pioneer elevator just outside of Carseland Carseland

Yearly Big Event: Carseland Ag Days - late June. Parade, tractor pull, free breakfast, rock climbing wall, bounce house for the children, Fun Card Casino, mechanical bull, barbecue, firefighter demonstrations, and family dance.

Golden Future
Preliminary plans are in the works for a major residential development as an addition to the hamlet.

Chancellor

On CP's Standard to Bassano feeder line. Home to Chancellor Sports Club.

Proud Heritage
When the railroad reached Chancellor in 1912, the hamlet had a population of thirty. In 1917, area land (with 40 broken acres and a small house and barn) was sold to soldiers returning from WWI. By 1920, there were 130 farmers in the Chancellor area. In 1948, a two sheet curling rink was built. In 1950, oil was found and Chancellor found itself sitting atop an oil field. The Hussar gas plant just north of Chancellor provided work for many local boys.

Cheadle

Two miles south of the TransCanada Highway on Hwy 24. Home to Cheadle Hall.

Proud Heritage
When the early ranchers and homesteaders came, there was just one little building in Cheadle: a store, post office and boarding house, run by Mrs. Belwer for the C.P.R section-men. From this small beginning Cheadle grew in the years 1906-1916 to three grocery stores, a hardware, barbershop, restaurant, pool hall, blacksmith shop, water tank, C.P.R station and section houses, livery stable, lumberyard, dance hall, two elevators, and several residences.

The coming of the automobile and another C.P.R. line from Gleichen to Calgary, through Carseland and Dalemead, and building of the C.N.R. through Lyalta and Ardenode, stopped growth for the thriving town of Cheadle. By 1985, the last grain elevator was removed and the quiet community was left with just its residents.

Golden Future
Since the year 2000, there has been an expansion of residental homes on the West side of Cheadle. Developments on the east side followed in 2005. With many residents of Calgary looking to the smaller communities as a way of escaping the problems of large city living. Cheadle's population is expected to grow significantly in the coming years.

Danish immigrants began settling the area in 1917, most arriving in the spring of 1918. Once the colony was in place, the Bethlehem Luthern Congregation was established. In September 1936, Dalum's most unique piece of architecture, the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Dalum, was dedicated.

In the early '30s, Gleichen installed the first pressure irrigation system in North America. The town was the centre of a dynamic grain and irrigation agriculture industry. Following WWII, with improved roads and transportation (which drew people and businesses to larger centres) a slow decline set in and, by 1997, the town had reverted to a Hamlet of Wheatland County.

Golden Future

Proud Heritage
The first settlers arrived in the Rosebud area in 1885. At that time the closest business center was Gleichen, some 30 miles distant so most settlers traveled there for groceries and supplies. Gleichen was also the source of mail service until January 1901, when the official Rosebud Creek Post Office was established in the Hamlet of Rosebud. The hamlet started to flourish after the First World War (1914-1918) and many businesses prospered. The hotel, store, lumber yard, Chinese café and laundry, a dance hall, pool hall, blacksmith shop, drugstore, bank and dray business. National Grain had built an elevator in 1913 and two more companies built elevators in 1917 to accommodate the influx of settlers who were breaking up the prairie sod and planting grains. Later several machinery dealerships were established: John Deere; Massey Harris; and Harvester served the farmers in the area. The 1920s were the boom years for Rosebud yet it continued to be the business center for the community until the early 1970s when most of the businesses had shut down as a result of the local school being amalgamated with nearby Standard School. In 1973, Crescent Heights Baptist Church in Calgary purchased the Rosebud Mercantile Building, which became part of the Rosebud School of the Arts and Rosebud Theatre.

Golden Future
At the heart of Rosebud is Rosebud Theatre, Alberta's only rural professional theatre. In addition, you will find Little Country Blessings General Store, gift shops and galleries, which sell local and regional arts and crafts. The scenic nine-hole executive golf course offers a challenging game. The Centennial Museum, once the local Chinese laundry, displays artifacts and photographs of pioneer life.
