Area Overview

The Town of Grimshaw's location at the start of the Mackenzie Highway [Mile Zero] has made the town an important transportation route. The Mackenzie Highway provides a vital supply route to northern communities starting at Grimshaw to its destination at Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories.

The Town also serves as a major service and supply centre for the exploration of oil and gas in the Mackenzie Region. The agriculture and forestry sectors are also well served by Grimshaw's advantageous location as a transportation hub.

With the Mackenzie Region's growing attraction as a tourism destination area, Grimshaw stands at the door of opportunity for future growth.

Location

The Town of Grimshaw is located in the Municipal District of Peace #135 in northwest Alberta. The Town is Mile Zero of the Mackenzie Highway and is at the junction of two major transportation routes, Highway 2 heading south to Grande Prairie, and Highway 35 [Mackenzie Highway] heading north to the Northwest Territories. Secondary Highway 685 is also accessible from Grimshaw, which runs west to Fort St. John and connects to the Alaska Highway. Grimshaw is 26 km from Peace River, 174 km from Grande Prairie, and 513 km from Edmonton

Economic Base

The Town of Grimshaw's economic base is tied to the three pillar industries of Alberta, namely agriculture, energy and forestry.

The agricultural area surrounding the Town has 93 frost free days and 2,060 hours of sunshine annually. The main commodities are wheat, barley, canola, oats, peas, sheep, bison, elk, beef, swine and honey. As well, the area around Grimshaw contains vast reserves of oil and natural gas, and much of the construction and supply needs are provided by companies located in Grimshaw. Daishowa Canada Ltd. operates a pulp mill 48 km northeast of Grimshaw.

Water Supply
The Town of Grimshaw's water is supplied by reservoir and a community well, and is distributed via a piped system. The water supply undergoes chlorination and fluoridation treatment. The reservoir capacity is 5,908 cubic metres. The usage rate is a flat fee of $10.00 per month, plus $4.00 per 1000 gallons metered.

Waste Management
The Town of Grimshaw's sewage is on a pipe collection system and is disposed of in retention ponds. The treatment system consists of eight anaerobic cells and five
aerobic cells. The usage fee for metered premises is a flat rate of $10.00 per month for residential and commercial. $30.00 per month for industrial and restaurants. For schools, hospitals, hotels and motels the rate is based on 50% of the water consumed per
month.

Grimshaw is part of the Long Lake Regional Waste Management System. Residential garbage is picked up weekly at a flat rate of $10.00 per month. In addition, there is a recycling fee of $1.85 per month. A $5.00 monthly fee applies to commercial, industrial and institutional for the Long Lake Regional Waste Management Services. Industrial/commercial garbage pickup is on a 2-3 times a week schedule by private contractor.

Transportation

Air Service

  • The Town of Grimshaw owns a 912 metre grass airstrip used for light aircraft, which is only open during the summer months.
  • Commercial air service is provided via the Peace River Airport, 16 kilometres northeast of Grimshaw.
  • Peace Air offers scheduled flights to Edmonton, Calgary and a number of other centres in Alberta and British Columbia, and also offers charter service. Budget, Avis and Tilden vehicle rentals are available at the airport.
  • Local charter services are provided by: Northern Air Charter (Tel: 780-624-1911); Highland Helicopters Ltd. (Tel: 780-624-5555); and Ultra Helicopters Ltd. (Tel: 780-332-2995).

  • The Mackenzie Northern Railway runs rail service to Grimshaw.

Couriers Greyhound Canada in Grimshaw offers courier service. Purolator Courier Ltd. has a drop off point in Grimshaw at Beyond 2000. Community Lifestyle

Recreation
The Town of Grimshaw has many recreation and culture facilities available to accommodate most indoor and outdoor recreational pursuits. (ie) Outdoor Swimming Pool, Arena, Curling Rink, Family Fitness Centre, 6 Ball Diamonds, SK8 "N" Bike Park, Parks and Playgrounds, R.V. Park, and a Seniors Drop In Centre. Some programs include; Summer Fun, Adult Wellness Clinic, and Awesome Afterschool Program. There are also many facilities for recreation within close proximity of the town, such as golf courses and camping facilities.

The Hidden Lake Mile Zero Campground is located in Grimshaw. It features 25 RV stalls with power and water services. Shower, washroom and laundry facilities on site.

Besides the many community parks in Grimshaw there is Queen Elizabeth Provincial Park, located 5 km northwest of Town, and Wilderness Park, located 5 km to the northeast. Both parks offer recreation/event facilities.

Grimshaw is in the Peace Country Health Region. The Peace River Community Health Centre has 30 acute care beds. The Grimshaw Berwyn & District Community Health Centre has emergency (24 hour), laboratory, radiology services, including long term continuing care beds.

The medical clinic is located in the Town's downtown core. Dental services are also available in Grimshaw.
