Welcome to Westlock County!  The County of Westlock consists of 1200 square miles and is situated less than one hour from the province’s capital city of Edmonton.  With a thriving, progressive farming community and a strong commercial sector the County contains a vibrant mix of town and country.

Westlock County is committed to the quality of life and to providing economic opportunities while respecting our natural environment.

The center of our County holds the towns of Westlock and Clyde and these are surrounded by 9 smaller hamlets (Busby, Pickardville, Pibroch, Dapp, Jarvie, Fawcett, Vimy, Nestow and Tawatinaw).  The overall population is close to 12,000 including all within the County borders.

Tourism & Recreation

Westlock County enjoys a number of fantastic recreational choices.  Recreational facilities within the Towns, Hamlets and County include the Westlock Community Recreation Centre (Swimming Pool, Gym, Racquet Courts), 3 indoor skating arenas and numerous outdoor facilities, a bowling alley, 4 curling rinks, the Edmonton Skydive Centre, Westlock Golf Course, Hidden Valley Golf Course, Altador Athletic Field, Rotary Trail 2000, Westlock Action Sports Park (Skateboard Park), Motocross Track, dozens of ball diamonds and numerous parks and playgrounds.

Bird Watching

Alberta is the only place in North America where the prairie, boreal forest and mountain ecosystems coexist. Bird watching opportunities abound within Westlock County. American pelicans, trumpeter swans, egrets, songbirds and hundreds more species can be spotted right here.

 

   

Long Island Lake

Discover the natural beauty of Long Island Lake. Camping is a very popular recreational activity and Long Island Lake is a wonderful site in a natural setting. Long Island Lake is operated by Westlock County and reservations can be made by calling 780-954-2261.

 

Rainbow Park

Rainbow Park is a perfect site for a relaxing day in the country. This day-use picnic site located in Westlock County encompasses 20 acres. There is a large pond stocked annually for angling enthusiasts, a sheltered picnic building, numerous sites with fire pits and picnic tables and plenty of open space for wide games.

  

Tawatinaw Valley Alpine and Nordic Centre

Tawatinaw Valley Alpine and Nordic Centre spreads over 140 acres and offers 24 groomed runs that provide challenges for skiers of all abilities. There are also over 20 km of cross-country ski trails with the most spectacular views of the historic Tawatinaw Valley and Landing Trail. Those who have already discovered Tawatinaw Valley return every year to enjoy their friendly atmosphere.

Religious Services

 Westlock County Council & Administration

Governed by the Municipal Government Act, Westlock County Council is comprised of a reeve and six Councillors. Each member serves a three-year term. Council’s main purpose is to provide good government, and pass bylaws and policies that develop and maintain safe and viable communities and encourage active lifestyles, recreation and healthy communities.

Climate

 

Westlock County has a wide climatic range with over 2000 hours of sunshine and annual precipitation of over 520 mm (21 inches). As Spring brings the melting snows and new calf crop, the farmers are gearing up for another growing season. Summer’s warm weather sees the campgrounds fill up while campers enjoy the lakes and ATV trails. Fall comes with beautiful foliage that is enjoyed by many along the Pembina River while the farmers are wrapping up their harvests and the hunters find their favorite locations. Winter is also a time to play and enjoy the outdoors. Tawatinaw Valley Ski hill welcomes thousands to their slopes and cross-country trails while the Pembina Drift Busters take to the trails with all the snowmobile enthusiasts.
